2012 Chicago Auto Show: 2013 Acura RDX
The production 2013 Acura RDX debuts today at the Chicago Auto Show, right on the heels of the initial concept reveal last month in Detroit . The RDX coming to a dealership near you this spring closely resembles the original concept, with a hint of platformmate Honda CR-V . The RDX is slightly longer than the CR-V, and it is most distinguished from it and the original RDX by its powertrain. Gone is the unrefined, not particularly fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder, replaced with a 273-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission. Acura claims this larger engine, producing 33 more horsepower over the outgoing model, will deliver better fuel economy. Initial EPA estimates put the front-drive RDX at 20 city, 28 highway mpg. The all-wheel-drive RDX is estimated at 19 city, 28 highway mpg. As with the new ILX sedan , interior notables include a Pandora radio interface for streaming Internet audio, text message integration, and keyless access with push-button start. It goes one, make that two, better than the ILX with a three-view back-up camera. Less exciting, though more practical, news is that the RDX promises to provide more passenger space with larger doors to ease access, increased cargo space, and an available power liftgate. A Technology package packs the RDX with a surround-sound audio system and navigation, with real-time traffic and weather information. The RDX will go on sale this spring. For $13,000, This 928’s Wad is Blown [Nice Price Or Crack Pipe]
For all its veneration, Porsche’s 928 doesn’t seem to get all that much respect. As example, today’s Nice Price Or Crack Pipe ‘82 928S has gone from Weissach to Woodward, but is its price at least respectable? Speed cameras ‘do not prevent road accidents’
Filed under: Latest News A report into speed cameras in the Thames Valley area has found that they have resulted in “no reduction in the number of collisions after they were installed.” According to the Association of British Drivers (ABD), this makes the proliferation of speed cameras an “abysmal failure.” The independent report, compiled and funded by engineer Dave Finney, concludes that ’speed cameras [in the Thames Valley area] have not made any impact in preventing road traffic collisions.’ That includes all 212 fixed Gatso cameras and 105 mobile speed check sites in the Thames Valley. The report finds that there is ‘no relationship between vehicle speeds and the number of collisions,’ and that ‘reductions in speeds at the camera sites did not result in any reduction in the number of collisions.’ In fact, looking at Gatso sites specifically, despite a 4.7mph average speed reduction after placement of the cameras, a 0.5% increase in collisions was recorded. Mr Finney argues that the Government is essentially manipulating speed camera effectiveness figures to justify their existence . The DfT’s biggest speed camera report, called Four-Year Evaluation (4YE) and published in 2005, states that 42% fewer people were killed or seriously injured at speed camera sites after they were installed. However, According to author Mr Finney, this cannot be the case because less than 8% of those collisions involved a vehicle that was speeding. In fact, using the statistics published in the 4YE, Mr Finney found that a speed camera site prevents, on average, one fatality once every 197 years, and one serious injury once every decade. That’s of course better than nothing, but nowhere near the dramatic reduction claimed by the DfT. Chairman of the ABD Brian Gregory responded to the Thames Valley report by saying it “highlights what we have long suspected, that the whole speed camera fiasco has saved no lives.” He goes on: “By diverting attention away from the real causes of accidents [it] has actually cost lives. We are grateful to the government for forcing reluctant camera partnerships to reveal the previously hidden statistics which enabled this report, but they must now acknowledge this...
Ferrari 250 GTO sells for a record-breaking £20m
Filed under: Classic cars A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO has changed hands for £20.2m, making it the most expensive car ever sold in the UK – and possibly the world. The ambiguity on the world record front is because in 2010 a Bugatti Type 57SC sold for a price understood to be between £20- and £26m . Either way, this is still a staggering price even for a Ferrari 250 GTO – undoubtedly one of the most sought after cars in the world. There’s also some ambiguity when it comes to the sale itself. The registered owner of the GTO – a 1963 model, number 5905 – is Jon Hunt, a British entrepreneur who made his fortune developing then selling Foxtons estate agency. The £20.2m sale of 5905 has been confirmed, but the buyer has not and Mr Hunt is yet to comment. According to The Telegraph , the car is now heading to Spain. The rarity and provenance of the 250 GTO make it so sought after and expensive. Only 39 were built from 1962 to 1964, costing around £6,000 at the time and packing a 3.0-litre V12 engine with 300bhp. Its performance is therefore similar to a hot hatch today, with a 0-60mph time of around six seconds and a 174mph top speed, but in the ’60s the GTO was a prolific and successful racer. This particular model made its competitive debut in 1963 at the Tour de France road race, placing second. It went on to win three prestigious races the following year: Les Andelys hillclimb, Rallye de Picardie, and Rallye du Limousin. Whoever has bought the 250 GTO joins Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason in the owners club, as well as ginger haired former rebel turned Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans, who paid £12m for his in 2010. Quoted in The Telegraph, John Collins of specialist Ferrari seller Talacrest said: “Classic Ferraris have seen more gains than others, they’re like the Picassos of the car world, and the 250 GTO is the golden car of its generation. “Show me a man who wouldn’t want one. I have bought and sold seven over the years including this model, and I wish I had kept one now.”   Read the original post: Ferrari 250 GTO sells for a record-breaking £20m Read the original:  Ferrari 250 GTO sells for a record-breaking £20m
Whirlwind sheep fancy Russian car with funny results
Filed under: Humour Believe it or not, but the hairy beige animals encircling this blue Russian car (a Lada I think) are sheep. Apparently, the farmer concerned was just trying to get down the lane, but the way they form a perfect cyclone around the car would either suggest they have been well trained, or find this particular car very attractive. Car Commercialism: The Making of OK Go’s “Needing/Getting” Music Video – Feature
Damian Kulash Jr. sits in one of the editing suites of a media-production house in downtown San Francisco, watching clips on a computer screen of a silver Chevy Sonic doing hand-brake turns in a dust cloud. The car is festooned with what looks like forks, hockey sticks, TV antennas, railroad horns, shark spears, and a couple of dead Persian cats, which are in fact large microphones fitted with furry windsocks. Inside the car, three guys plus Kulash—each in a driving suit and matching helmet of a different lollipop color—pull levers, finger small pneumatic keyboards called melodicas, and mouth the words to a song called “Needing/Getting.” Keep Reading: Car Commercialism: The Making of OK Go’s “Needing/Getting” Music Video – Feature Here is the original post: Car Commercialism: The Making of OK Go’s “Needing/Getting” Music Video – Feature Go here to see the original: Car Commercialism: The Making of OK Go’s “Needing/Getting” Music Video – Feature
Custom 6×6 Ford truck is almost as ridiculous as it is massive [Found On EBay]
It seems with custom 4×4 show trucks and the people who build them “more” is always better. It doesn’t particularly matter what it is—wheels, lift, length, silly graphics—the more there is, the better it is. If ever there were a vehicle to illustrate this way of thinking it’s this 6×6 1993 Ford F350 currently listed on Ebay. Undoubtedly the idea of stumbling across a Porsche 356 in neglected but solid original condition is the stuff of gearhead dreams. The relative mechanical simplicity of the 356 and it’s iconic shape lend itself perfectly to the idea of driving and enjoying it in slightly deteriorated original condition.
