Video: RV ‘rips’ around the Nurburgring
Now, this is a video that will make you ‘LOL’ (laugh out loud). Here’s something you don’t see everyday of the week, especially on the Nurburgring racetrack; a 6 wheeled recreation vehicle whizzing around with some sports cars. Although some coaches and camper vans do sprint around the ‘Ring, this is the first video we’ve encountered of a RV doing the same. See the video after the break! Drunken millionaire crashes McLaren SLR into another car (CH)
Photo: Blick.ch According to MotorAuthority , last week saw Italian socialite, Roberto Parli crash his McLaren SLR supercar in Switzerland. While the accident is still being analysed, Parli is thought to have side-swiped an oncoming car on a Swiss motorway, causing the vehicle to lose its right front wheel. He allegedly continued to drive, hitting another car and losing its left front wheel. Photo: Blick.ch Parli is a determined man, and apparently attempted to continue his journey but was finally stopped by other motorists in addition to an engine fire. Once departing the vehicle, Parli apparently shouted: “I’m a millionaire, I’ll pay for everything I don’t care,” at the scene. Millionaire or not, we doubt Parli’s car insurance firm will payout any money. BMW Motorsport interviews Dirk Muller
BMW Motorsport interviews Dirk Muller
Dirk Müller and his BMW Team RLL team-mates got their American Le Mans Series campaign off to a start with a win. In an interview, the German talks about his 2011 program. Mr. Müller, how significant was the victory in the GT class at the Sebring 12-hour race? Dirk Müller: “This race is simply fantastic and, apart from the Indy500, is possibly the most important motorsport event in North America. Sebring is also a very important fixture on the ALMS calendar, as more points are on offer there than at the other races. It was great to start the season with a win there. That was my second victory in Sebring, but this year’s success was very special.” Is that because the opposition was so strong? Müller: “Yes, definitely. 20 cars lined up in the GT class alone, and there were almost 60 cars out on the track. That is a ridiculously tight field. For this reason the one-two there has given the entire team, and us drivers, a huge boost.” And that was just the start of the season – one that could have a few more highlights in store for you… Müller: “I am lucky to be able to race at some of the very best circuits in the American Le Mans Series. My personal favourite in America is Road America. Outside of the ALMS, it is well known that the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is my very favourite circuit. The calendar is packed and I am really looking forward to the season with BMW Team RLL and the outings at the 24-hour classics in Europe.” You have been driving at the top level of GT racing for many years. Are you still learning? Müller: “As a driver, you improve with every weekend, every lap you drive, and every minute you spend with the engineers. Motorsport has become far more demanding and complex in recent years. The races themselves have also changed. Earlier, endurance racing was all about keeping the car going for the entire duration of the race. That is a thing of the past. Today it is basically one sprint race after another. As a result, the drivers also face new challenges accordingly.” As well as works drivers, countless privateers are also active in motorsport with BMW cars. Do you like the Customer Racing program? Müller: “Yes, very much so. It is important that a company like BMW commits to customer...
The success story of a global trendsetter: Five generations of the BMW 3 Series
The success story of a global trendsetter: Five generations of the BMW 3 Series
If there is such a thing as a typical BMW, then it is without a doubt the BMW 3 Series. In the medium-size class it is considered the embodiment of the sports sedan and has maintained this leading role for many years unchallenged at the top of the premium segment. Since debuting in the year 1975, more than 12 million customers worldwide have purchased a BMW 3 Series, even though the car cannot be associated with any typical customer segment. So the reasons for this remarkable success are manifold. Then as now, the BMW 3 Series concept was unique – a compact and elegant body design, modern and efficient engines, a classic rear-wheel drive concept and a sporty suspension setup. The result was a maximum degree of driving dynamics and agility. Moreover, BMW demonstrated a strong sense for the spirit of the time and the individual wishes of potential customers. This in turn resulted in innovative body concepts and additional technical features that competitors were unable to offer. In this respect as well, the BMW 3 Series was the first to set the benchmark in the midrange sports sedan segment. The latest examples of this are the measures implemented within the framework of BMW EfficientDynamics, thanks to which the BMW 3 Series achieves the lowest fuel consumption and emission levels in its class. The BMW 3 Series Convertible, the BMW 3 Series Touring, the BMW 3 Series Coupé and the BMW 3 Series Compact eventually followed the sedan – the best-selling model variant in the global market. In addition, BMW designed the high-performance sports sedan BMW M3. The success story of the world’s most widely sold premium car began 36 years ago with a two-door version. 1975: The first generation E21. With the presentation of the first BMW 3 Series in July 1975, BMW opened a new chapter in the history of the automobile. Right from the start, the two-door sedan with compact dimensions and a sporty character has its very own distinctiveness. The kidney grille dominates the front end and with a length of 4355 mm, a width of 1610 mm and a height of 1380 mm, the new car has a compact but at the same time ‘grown-up’ appearance. Track widths of 1364 mm at the front and 1377 mm at the rear provide the car with a powerful look. This is complemented by state-of-the-art, sporty...
The Sights and Sounds of the 12 Hours of Sebring
It’s ironic, but I find myself racing to a race. It’s 4PM on Friday and I’m hurtling towards the small lakeside town of Sebring, Florida. A good 75 or so miles due south of Disney World – down Highway 27. I was running late and, because of my poor planning, I was to be sleeping in my car that night as I hadn’t been able to reserve a room within a 60 mile radius of the city. Of course, this is the weekend of the 12 Hours of Sebring – so should I expect it. Upon arriving at registration, I was warmly greeted by a flock of wonderfully helpful women who managed to get me into the gate and settled quickly with my press and paddock credentials. Unfortunately, I’d arrived just after the completion of the GT qualifying and missed Dirk Werner and Dirk Muller placing the all-new BMW Team RLL M3 GT’s in 3rd and 4th place – squarely behind the dangerous challenger of last year, a Ferrari 430GT and a factory Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin. I decided to reintroduce myself to the team trailers area and see the sights of the 2011 12 Hours of Sebring. For those that haven’t been or seen it on television – and it’s pathetic how little coverage this race gets by comparison to NASCAR races – Sebring is sort of like a reverse Superbowl for sports cars, coming at the start of the season versus the end, but with just as many people present and perhaps more beer – akin to the major endurance races in Europe like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nurburgring and Spa. In the paddock area, there is a smorgusboard of racing gear, photos and paintings, food and beer stands – literally anything you could want to eat or drink is available. Perhaps this is like Bourbon Street mixed with an endurance race? Either way, I ignored the temptations of the delicious beer and moved onward toward the pitwall and over the pedestrian bridge and snaked my way through tents and campers to the BMW CCA’s incredible hospitality tent set up alongside the track between turns 6 and 7. There we met up with Stephen Maguire, our buddy with United BMW of Roswell, and Mike Maguire, instructor from the BMW Performance Driving School. After a quick reintroduction and seeing some excellent examples of Bavarian machinery from the...

David E. Davis, Jr. 1930–2011
David E. Davis, Jr., died on March 27, 2011, while recuperating from cancer surgery. He was 80 years old. Davis was widely acknowledged as the dean of automotive journalism, the man who turned Car and Driver into the world’s largest automotive magazine, and the founder, in 1986, of Automobile magazine. Over his long career, he worked at all four major car titles, with detours for triumphant stints in the advertising business. David E. was born in Burnside, Kentucky, on November 7, 1930, in a house with no running water. He learned to drive on a Jeep belonging to his uncle, who enlisted David E.’s help building a road up to the house. That was the first in a lifetime of automotive adventures stretching across six decades and seven continents. He said the secret to his success lay in his ability to marry southern storytelling to big-city presentation. These gifts prompted Bill Ziff, the owner of Car and Driver up until 1985, to call David E. “the man who made special-interest magazines sing.” It was a formula that many other magazines, including some with great literary aspirations, rode to their own success. And it’s still the foundation of what we try do here every month. He was so in love with the craft and subject matter of car magazines that he came to inhabit an archetype. He was the dashing, witty, high-spirited, and deeply knowledgeable writer/editor who brought the automobile to life, whose personal flair transferred to whatever he was writing about. David E. could have written and edited brilliantly on a wide range of topics, from military history to hunting to food to travel to books. But he chose cars, he said, because that’s where the action was. The automobile, in David E.’s formulation, was not only the thing that took you to your next adventure; a great car was an adventure self-contained. I remember walking into his office at Automobile magazine for the first time twenty years ago. It was filled with automotive art, a grille of a Mercedes-Benz 600, photos he took of his racing heroes from the post-war Grand Prix era, and a nimbus of cigar smoke. Outside his office hung an ad for Booth’s House of Lords Gin bearing the words, “Protest Against the Rising Tide of Conformity.” I walked out of there thinking, That’s what I want my...
2012 Buick LaCrosse eAssist – First Drive Review
Paying more for an electric boost that affects fuel economy and nothing else—and that’s the point. The GM engineers assigned to the LaCrosse eAssist project don’t want you to be able to tell they’ve done anything to the car. The goal of the eAssist was to create a more fuel-efficient version of the four-cylinder LaCrosse using an evolution of the mild hybrid system used in the old Chevrolet Malibu hybrid and Saturn Aura Green Line. Their benchmark? Last year’s nonhybrid LaCrosse, so the system had to be more economical while being undetectable. Talk about a thankless task. BMW working on TwinPower 3-cylinder engines
BMW working on TwinPower 3-cylinder engines
With the launch of the first four-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged engine, BMW made a statement that in the future it will move away from naturally aspirated engines. Several four-cylinder turbocharged powerplants are in works, but today AutoNews reports on BMW’s plans to expand the TwinPower Turbo package to 3-cylinder engines, both gasoline and diesel. Earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW introduced the X1 xDrive28i with the N20 four-cylinder turbo. The engine produces 245 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque (258 lb of torque) and will be available in United States by the end of this year. While not officially announced, we anticipate the Z4 sDrive28i to be the first model to receive the upgrade. N20 four-cylinder turbo featured Expanding the TwinPower Turbo technology to a broader range of engines is part of BMW’s commitment to cut average carbon dioxide emissions another 25 percent by 2020, after they were reduced 30 percent between 1995 and 2010. Last year, BMW group sales in Europe averaged 148g/km of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 5.4 liters per 100km with diesel engines and 6.6 liters with gasoline models. According to AutoNews, BMW has not yet announced when the TwinPower Turbo package will be offered on a new family of 3-cylinder engines, but we anticipate the new engines to debut next year along with the second generation 1 Series Hatchback and the next generation MINI. BMW has said this 3-cylinder unit, part of a modular family which also includes 4-cylinder, gasoline and diesel units will be the company’s highest volume engine family, powering up to 1.5 million of the automaker’s cars a year by 2014-2015. To learn more about the capabilities of the new four-cylinder TwinPower unit, click through for an exclusive interview with Dr. Bernardo Lopez, Head of Drivetrain Evaluation. BMW Team RLL locks out second row on the GT grid in Sebring
BMW Team RLL locks out second row on the GT grid in Sebring
BMW Team RLL secured promising grid positions for the first race of the 2011 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in Sebring (US) today. Dirk Werner (DE) finished third in the GT class, setting a lap time of 2:01.841 minutes at the wheel of the no. 55 BMW M3 GT in the 15-minute qualifying session for the classic 12-hour race in Sebring (US). Driving the second BMW M3 GT (no. 56), Dirk Müller (DE) clocked a 2:02.139- minute lap at the 3.7-mile “Sebring International Raceway”, which put him fourth in the GT classifications. Ferrari’s Gianmaria Bruni (IT) secured pole position. The opening round of the ALMS season gets underway on Saturday at 10:30hrs local time (14:30hrs GMT). Over the course of the 12-hour marathon Werner will share driving duties in the no. 55 BMW M3 GT with Bill Auberlen (US) and Augusto Farfus (BR). In the second car Müller will alternate with Joey Hand (US) and Andy Priaulx (GB). Bobby Rahal (Team Principal): “The first qualifying of the year absolutely went according to plan for us. From third and fourth on the grid, we can now head into the season opener optimistically. Confidence is a crucial factor in a 12-hour race. Obviously the car needs to be reliable, but you also need the full belief within your team that you can win. With the hard work put in over the winter we have laid the foundation to kick off our 2011 campaign successfully.” Dirk Werner (Car number 55): “This is a fantastic result. The first qualifying session of the season always helps you to judge where you really stand compared to the opposition. It’s great to see the successful outcome of the intense development and testing work, as we are very close to the front-runners. In a 12-hour race, however, it’s not just the pure performance that counts. The reliability of the car must be good and we mustn’t do any mistakes. Third on the grid is a good starting point.” Dirk Müller (Car number 56): “It was our goal to make it into the first two rows. It’s great we managed just that with both our cars. This shows how hard BMW Motorsport and the team worked in the past months. The race will be a big show, as the field is ultra-competitive and there are much more cars on the grid than last year. Our first goal is to...
2012 Audi A6 3.0 TDI – First Drive Review
Audi’s diesel V-6 proves a terrific match for its delicious new mid-sizer. In our first drive of the 2012 Audi A6 , we did something a bit unusual. We said the A6 is “approaching perfection.” We don’t drop the P-bomb too often, because there is no such thing as the perfect car. A perfect ed car, on the other hand, is conceivable, and after driving the 2012 A6 again, this time in diesel-powered 3.0 TDI form, we’re even more convinced of Audi’s proximity to this goal. Even better, the company recently announced that the A6 3.0 TDI will come to the U.S. within the next 24 to 30 months.
