Audi Previews A3 Hatchback
Audi Previews A3 Hatchback
The Geneva Motor Show last month brought the introduction of Audi’s A3 Sedan Concept . The car was unique in that, being a sedan, it was a first for the A3 lineup. The current A3 is sold in hatchback-only form here and abroad. The new car represents Audi’s increased global reach and desire to increase sales in the United States. The Shanghai Motor Show, just around the corner, will see Audi debut its new Q3 crossover, which was previewed by a concept in 2007. Here we see the look of the hatchback variant, and it follows a similar formula to the current car but appears to be longer, lower and sleeker. Audi is definitely becoming more design oriented. The biggest news is a sketch of the production interior, which we think is absolutely gorgeous. There is a clear performance focus in the styling and it blazes a different path then current Audi interiors. One thing it retains is the circular-vent design theme of the current A3. Audi uses the circular vents in the A1, A3, TT and R8, lending credence to a performance intent. The production A3 is slated to debut next year at the Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes Previews Small Car Future with A-Class Concept
Mercedes Previews Small Car Future with A-Class Concept
The world was stunned when Mercedes-Benz introduced the A-Class in 1997, which was a more downmarket entry than ever before. Since then, 1.7 million units of the MPV have been sold, and the car has never reached our shores. It hasn’t been known for being the most stylish vehicle, but Mercedes is hoping to change that. The A-Class Concept at the Shanghai Auto Show is meant to provide a good preview of what to expect from the next-generation production vehicle. While Audi has brought over the A3 and BMW introduced the 1-Series in the U.S, Mercedes has been content to keep the C-Class as the brand’s entry-level model for now. That could change with the next-generation of the A-Class, however. The wait to introduce in the U.S definitely seems to be worth it. Look beyond some of the showcar pizzaz and you can see a car that clearly ditches the tall, narrow “Sandwich” design of the current model. Instead, it goes for more traditional hatchback proportions, with an aggressive design that wholeheartedly embraces Mercedes new styling themes. The all-LED headlights flow into a protrusion for the grille, which is unique for its “starry night” design. Instead of traditional inlets, it utilizes numerous metallic silver hexagons on black stems. It’s a very neat design element we’d like to see make it to production. Previously, Mercedes styling has been pretty benign. Starting with the redesigned CLS, designs from the brand have been bolder and more defined. The concept is powered by a new 2.0-liter BlueEFFICIENCY four-cylinder making 210 horsepower. It is mated to Mercedes’ dual-clutch transmission. This engine series is designed to be transverse mounted and is slated to power the Mercedes small car range. Mercedes says the production car will be a technology leader in its class, with segment firsts being a radar-based collision warning system and adaptive Brake Assist. Mercedes makes it clear the car “previews a new compact class era at Mercedes-Benz.” With an introduction at the New York International Auto Show, it is an era that could finally include the U.S as well. Check out our full gallery below to see what Mercedes has in store for the future of its compact lineup. Related posts: Mercedes-Benz...
Saab Halts Production (Again)
Saab Halts Production (Again)
When Spyker purchased Saab, fans hoped its days of enduring bad coverage over finances would be over. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it is happening. Despite introducing new models and increasing sales across the globe (recovering from 2009′s pitifully low levels), Saab is experiencing difficulties with its cash situation. After a nearly 40 year stint at the company, Saab’s Chief Executive Officer Jan Ake Jonsson recently resigned, citing “three demanding years.” While resigning, he said he remains “convinced that Saab Automobile is on the right track.” An all-new 9-3 is said to be arriving next year. Production in Trollhattan has been idled again today after a similar idling of the plant that took place last week. The situation stems from Saab’s inability to pay suppliers. The company is reportedly looking for more liquidity, and is signing on a Russian investor to infuse cash into the company. Yesterday, chairman and interim CEO Victor Muller meant to calm nerves: “This is an ongoing thing. It will take some time to get everyone back in line properly. We will get it under control.” Somehow that isn’t too confidence-inspiring. Having problems with liquidity this early into Spyker’s ownership is troubling, as they were expected to have enough cash to ride out difficult circumstances until sales could increase to break-even levels. The difficulty of running a business like Saab in current market conditions cannot be overstated. Also, in 20 years of General Motors ownership the automaker never turned a profit. With that history, suddenly turning one in just a year seems unrealistic. Hopefully Saab can defy the odds and get the situation under control. Should Gender Affect Insurance Rates?
Should Gender Affect Insurance Rates?
Evenly based on equal driving records, it is generally accepted that women receive better auto insurance rates than male drivers. Gender is said to contribute to only 5 percent of the overall calculations for auto insurance in the United States, the affect on car insurance premiums cuts deeply into the wallets of men on the road. By and large in the United States, this is confirmed by data published by insurance website InsWeb in 2010. Using median level across the United States driving population, women drivers pay an average 9 percent less than men on auto insurance on an annual basis. Per individual states, biggest difference came in Wyoming where women paid more than 20 percent less than their male driving counterpart. Only in Iowa state did male driver insurance rates prevail ahead of female rates by 1.1 percent. With the largest differential appearing for younger drivers, the limited driving record means younger women benefit from the factor of gender when first behind the wheel. While United States insurance companies continue to use gender to evaluate clients’ risk factors, the same measure will soon be prohibited in European countries including the United Kingdom and Germany. Belgium-based consumer lobbyist group Test-Achats filed a challenge in the European Union’s Court of Justice calling the insurance companies practice as gender discrimination. In a landmark ruling, the court agreed with Test-Achats’ compliant deeply changing insurance rating. For a wide-range of coverage not limited to auto and motorcycle insurance, providers are required by December of 2012 to no longer charge different policy premiums based on gender-related factors. According to BBC, women aged 16-25 could see insurance rate increases up to 25 percent compared to their current premium costs. The overall rate adjustments will likely see female drivers in Europe paying 6 percent more while male drivers could enjoy an 8 percent decrease per year on car insurance. Though the question of discrimination will shift insurance away from gender factors in European countries, companies operating within the North America and many other regions continue to view gender as an important evaluation tool. While over the years women have still enjoyed acknowledgment as safer drivers, some...
Audi Prices A7 Sportback at $59,250
Audi Prices A7 Sportback at $59,250
While the Mercedes-Benz CLS has spawned a lot of copycats (Hyundai Sonata and Volkswagen Passat CC, we’re looking at you), it has yet to see a direct competitor – until now. Audi introduced the A7 Sportback to go after the high-profit, image conscious segment Mercedes created with the CLS – four-door coupes. The A7 Sportback looks to compete very well on that level, offering a low-slung shape and rakish roofline. Positioning for the A7, like the CLS, comes just under the flagship full-size cars for each respective company. Pricing for the A7 checks in at $59,250. That is above the A6′s $52,300 asking price and the A8′s $78,050 starting figure. While a V-8 and S (maybe even RS) sport models are set to arrive later, the A7 Sportback will be launching with one lone engine, a 310 horsepower 3.0-liter TFSI V-6. Spring for pricey packages and standalone options and the A7′s price can go up quickly – up to $80,000 + if you load up on every option. For $62,810 Premium Plus adds Audi Connect and a navigation system. The top-line Prestige costs $66,580, still leaving a good amount of room between it and the top-line A8. You can price your own A7 Sportback out on Audi’s new configurator for the car . The A7 Sportback will be going on sale at Audi dealerships in the United States later this month. BMW M5 Concept Revealed
BMW M5 Concept Revealed
When a new BMW 5-Series generation rolls around, buyers always have to be a bit more patient for the M5 to debut in next-generation form. As such, the new M5′s on-sale date is a year away, but in terms of visuals we are looking at it right here. Concepts usually refer to design studies and vehicles that give designers the freedom to express themselves creatively. Lately, the tag is being applied more and more to production-ready vehicles. It is a pretty clever move actually, as it results in more coverage and interest in the final production model. Ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show, BMW has pulled the covers off the new M5, which it is dubbing a Concept. In reality, it is a very thinly-disguised preview of the production car going on sale next year. The new M5, like the rest of the 5-Series lineup, goes for traditional good looks rather than the Bangle design of the previous, V-10-powered car. As always, the M5 looks the performance part, finished in silver and showing off aggressive black wheels. The M5′s signature side fender vent also features, in a display of continuity with previous cars. As we said, the M5 Concept is clearly to drum up publicity while saving the real goods – the specifications – for a later date. Even the interior is hidden from view for now. Details other than that are sparing, but we do know the new car will ditch the V-10 powerplant of the previous car for a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. Its horsepower will near the 600 mark, with reports pegging it at around 580. The V-8 will be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for the first time. BMW says an Auto Stop feature and the efficiency of twin-turbocharging will help the engine to reduce emissions by 25 percent. No word on if fuel economy will see similar gains. For now, the M5 Concept is a clear look at the production car to come. Also, If the recent 1-Series M launch is any indication, BMW will be slowly leaking out everything over the next year. For now though, you can feast your eyes on the car in our gallery below. Stunning: New Images of Aston Martin Virage
To our eyes, there isn’t much more beautiful automobiles in the world than those currently produced by Aston Martin. British luxury and performance and luxury at its finest; new cars from the company have positioned Aston Martin at the top of the automotive heap once again. It’s (almost) enough to make us forget about the atrocity that is the Cygnet. The company’s “VH” aluminum chassis architecture has spawned many model variants, and the Virage is the latest in that succession. The car was first shown off ahead of the Geneva Auto Show in February. The Virage comes looking like a two-door version of the Rapide, and that means a sleeker and more elegant look than that of the DB9 and DBS. Count us as fans. Until now, we’ve been subject to the bland studio press photography that usually first accompanies automotive press releases. Aston Martin has just released some high-quality photography of the car now, and you can check out the latest stunner hailing from Britain in the gallery below. Report Says Ford Fiesta ST in the Works for 2012
Report Says Ford Fiesta ST in the Works for 2012
Hot hatches are a big thing in Europe, but our aversion to them in the United States hasn’t made them as much of a phenomenon here. Ford’s vehicles in North America are being converged with its European lineup though, which is making for some interesting possibilities. The Fiesta is gaining traction here on our shores, and the car posted a record sales month in March, coming just under the 10,000 unit mark. A way to enhance its appeal in the youth market is with with performance models. A similar plan is being followed with the 2012 Focus. The Fiesta could gain a large following for offering affordable, go-kart like fun with good gas mileage to boot. Ford Focus ST Shown Autocar is reporting that a Fiesta ST is in the works for 2012, and new spyshots have come out that seem to confirm that report. The spyshots show a lower, sportier looking Fiesta with a front intercooler and larger wheels. The Fiesta has been without a true performance model for a while, but with Ford’s World Rally Car program shifting from Focus to Fiesta, it could come at a perfect time. In Europe, the new model would go head-to-head with models like the Renaultsport Clio 200 and Seat Ibiza Cupra. The new car reportedly will use a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder making 180 horsepower and mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The car is said to get a launch late next year to coincide with a mid-cycle enhancement (MCE) for the entire Fiesta lineup. There is no confirmation of U.S sale, but with the Focus ST already approved and Fiesta sales on the upswing, we could definitely see it happening. Related posts: Lexus GS-F In The Works for 2012? Korean Design Showcased on Chevy Mi-ray Concept
Korean Design Showcased on Chevy Mi-ray Concept
Through the first months of 2011, Chevrolet provided North American auto show attendees a look at the soon-to-be-present unveiling Camaro convertible and the ZL1. Expanding on the revisited traditions making the General Motors division most adored during its heyday, sales figures relating to their vehicles illustrates Chevrolet has once again recaptured former glory. However, as Chevrolet becomes a new global brand, the ideals found on American roads, the daring voyage into the deeps of international tastes provoked the bowtie’s presence on a creature of more futuristic fashion. Debuting at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, the Chevrolet Mi-Ray roadster concept is a vociferous figure certifying global interest through design and ingenuity. Mi-ray (the Korean world for future) is the brainchild of the General Motors Advanced Design Studio in Seoul. Existing on a tighter wheelbase than the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic at 93.51 inches, the Mi-ray roadster concept exterior structure sings like an orchestra. Formed by a combination of carbon fiber and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, the complex yet harmonious presentation of the Mi-ray roadster concept is distinguished by youthful emotions. The design projects the desire to explore new horizons with eagerness. Speaking boldly to its aggressive intent, the LED headlamps are recessed under brow of bodywork. While the Chevrolet grille section rings some sense of familiarity, the Mi-ray roadster concept expressive shape draws special attention to the flared front fenders and sharp air dam and spoiler. Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Plugs Towards Production
Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Plugs Towards Production
Thanks to vehicles like the Tesla Roadster as well as Porsche’s 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car, the future of sports car racing is seen as electrified. Environmental preservation is a trend the auto industry as a whole is addressing and the exclusive supercar builders are not excluded. In fact, with supercars being a concentrated form of human emotion and passion set on wheels, it is only fitting these vehicles exhibit the latest advanced powertrains. As reported on Automoblog.net last year, the Porsche 918 Spyder concept’s ability to wow auto show crowds at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show has granted to vehicle a coveted production run. Set to become Porsche’s next halo car by late 2013, the top of the line 918 Spyder’s performance will be delivered courtesy of plug-in hybrid technology. Inching closer to the hands of performance drivers, Porsche has entered the next stage in bring the 918 Spyder to a street-going reality. Right now, orders for the Porsche 918 Spyder are being recorded by the German auto company practically certifying the supercar for customer availability. While the Panamera and Cayenne hybrid have already beaten the 918 Spyder to market as Porsche’s first display of hybrid drive technology, this first two-door supercar application by the German automaker has the alternative powertrain uniquely configured. Classified as a plug-in hybrid, the Porsche 918 Spyder can run up to 16 miles on electric only mode. Consisting of two electric motors, one each on the supercar’s front and rear axle, the variable all-wheel drive system allows the Porsche 918 Spyder to benefit from balanced weight distribution. Combined, the two electric motors will supply approximately 218 horsepower for zero emissions driving. When available, electrical charging of the Porsche 918 Spyder can be performed over a 7-hour period through a US household outlet or less with a quick charge unit. Confirming the gasoline engine power of the Porsche 918 Spyder will be originating from a V-8 powerplant, exact details of the Porsche 918 Spyder’s gasoline engine is not provided but the manufacturer has mentioned some ballpark expectations. Said to be no more than 4 liters in displacement, Porsche has guaranteed the 918 Spyder gasoline-only performance output will be at least 500 horsepower....
Mobile Apps Deter Distraction While Driving
Mobile Apps Deter Distraction While Driving
Becoming the new status symbol, mobile technology has reached the level of flash and enthusiasm that accompanied the automobile through its boom years of the 20th century. While the two pieces of complex technology share the existence of being a significant social bond, the presence of these items together has created a volatile grouping. The vast entertainment available from one and the high-speed movement of the other has now seen as a potential recipe for disaster. The popular of small handheld devices has resulted in a greater amount of vehicular incidents when the motorist is driving while distracted. Though driving while distracted can include a multitude of non-driving tasks including eating or even talking to passengers, electronic devices dominate concerns. The United States National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) figures for 2009 illustrate a worrisome reality of distracted driving. In total, 5,474 individuals have been killed in car accidents while one driver was distracted. With cell phones being fingered as the chief cause of distraction, for age groups 30-39 years recorded 24 percent are the result of the specific electronic device. For many jurisdictions, laws have come into force recently restricting and even some prohibiting the use of portable devices in efforts to curb the risk of accidents. Hoping to help establish a somewhat more seamless interaction with drivers, the effort to reconfigure the cockpit to suit high-tech usage has seen a number of solutions. Inventive? Yes! Effective? Well, maybe! Automakers have been attacking the driver distraction issue for years enabling hands-free and now speech-recognition technology systems into their newest vehicles. Bluetooth, Uconnect and Ford SYNC have risen as potential solutions maximizing a driver’s mobile interactivity behind the wheel well minimizing the factor of distraction. Capable of operating almost any modern cell phone through the vehicle’s on-board technology, most recent systems incorporate text-to-voice technology offering emails to be read out to occupants of the vehicle. Regarding the Ford SYNC technology, the auto company’s zeal to have the system widely available has seen the system installed in roughly 70 percent of current Ford products sold. Along with...
Aftermarket Tuner Gives VW GTI 35th Anniversary Gift
Aftermarket Tuner Gives VW GTI 35th Anniversary Gift
In 1974, the Volkswagen Golf was launched as the replacement to the legendary Beetle built on a more conventional front-engined compact car platform. A tough act to follow, the Golf (known as the Rabbit for many years in the United States and Canada) needed an image builder to warm small car buyers to the new Volkswagen product. Going in the direction of improved power and enhanced premium equipment, the Volkswagen Golf GTI was born in 1976 pioneering the factory hot hatch. In 2011, the Volkswagen Golf GTI celebrates 35 years of awaking the sport compact category. Though the factory has made few preparations for the GTI’s momentous occasion, one European-based aftermarket tuner realizes the automotive accomplishment is worthy of a noteworthy presentation. Using supply partners WUNSCHEL SPORT and OZ Racing, the GTI35.com aftermarket group has created a unique package taking the high-performance Volkswagen Golf beyond the stock GTI. The most defining difference GTI35.com carried out on the 2011 Volkswagen Golf GTI may not be distinguishable to the human eye. Furnishing a lower center of gravity than the stock version of the GT1, WUNSCHEL SPORT customized suspension lowers the ride height of the GTI35.com Golf by 25 millimeters (little less than an inch). Adding to the low ground clearance look, the special aftermarket edition Volkswagen Golf GTI features 19-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels from the Italian company‘s Quaranta series. Playing a part in the aftermarket anniversary celebration of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, OZ Racing has entered their 40th year of wheel production. Sporting larger diameter wheels, wider high-performance tires are matched with the GTI35.com Volkswagen Golf. Wearing a titanium paint job, the GTI35.com version of the Volkswagen Golf is given a mild makeover in either two or four-door body styles. Provided by WUNSCHEL SPORT, the exterior paintwork extended to the rocker panel trim as well as front and rear spoiler coating the titanium overtop of the matte black production pieces. Finishing touches to the body’s aesthetics includes GTI35.com’s addition of race-styled decals placed along the hood, front doors and rear hatch lid proclaiming “35 Years of Thunder GTI 1976-2011“. Present under the German sport compact’s hood, the 2011 Volkswagen...
New Chevrolet Colorado Truck Debuts in Bangkok
While full-sized trucks have been and continues to reign as the profit center for the major American auto companies, the compact to mid-sized utility pickups market is largely ignored in North America. It seems questionable if the Detroit 3 even want North American truck buyers to have the option of a smaller pickup truck. Discontinuing the long-running Ranger in the United States after this year, Ford Motor Company has quickly applied the nameplate to a larger vehicle. Unveiled for the Australian, Asian, African and even South American markets, the new Ford Ranger will not be available in the United States. At General Motors, the auto company’s mid-sized pickup trucks (the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon) are in dire need of an overhaul as they continue with a design first introduced in 2004. While still a capable and versatile smaller truck, the Colorado or Canyon are not enthusiastic members of the new GM. Debuting at the Bangkok International Auto Show in Thailand (said to be the biggest world market for mid-sized trucks), a drastically refreshed Chevrolet Colorado has now been revealed in show car form. Powered by a 2.8 liter turbodiesel powerplant, the all-wheel drive show vehicle is said to be a very close representation of the future Colorado production model. Immediately upon looking at the new truck, a completely new thought pattern is emerging in the formulation for Colorado. Resembling the Chevrolet Traverse crossover through front end styling, the Chevrolet Colorado show truck also casts wide track over the ground. Illusions of size is helped through beefy exterior paneling throughout the Colorado. a body colour tonneau cover, 20-inch aluminum wheels and the use of LED lighting concludes the modern touches added to the Colorado pickup. Overall, the exterior styling presents like the GMC Denali XT Hybrid concept shown at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. The Chevrolet Colorado show truck is a most refined yet still rugged appearance. Opening up the interior entrance doors of this apparent extended cab (through the rear passenger access doors looks more sensible for cargo), the show truck version of the Chevrolet Colorado displays a combination of luxury and utility. The front passenger area of the Chevrolet Colorado is fashioned on a premium vehicle...
Porsche Reboots 911 GT3 R Hybrid for 2011 Competition
Porsche Reboots 911 GT3 R Hybrid for 2011 Competition
The race track has long been an attractive test bed for street car technology. Forced-induction system, fuel injection, tire construction and even the rear view mirror were innovated through competition. Controlled but public arenas, the race track seems like the perfect proving grounds for hybrid technology. Several automakers have recognized the closed circuit combat as the chance to further gasoline-electric hybrid by educating the public as well as advancing the technology. In the mid 1990s, Chrysler toyed entering a hybrid vehicle called the Patriot into the 24 Hour of Le Mans. While the Chrysler Patriot never made it into competition, sports car magnate Don Panoz did attempt the feat in 1997 but failed to qualify into the Le Mans field. Most recently, Peugeot and Zytec launched hybrid race cars in the prototype class of sports car racing with limited race success. Becoming one of the first car companies to campaign a production-based GT variant in sports car racing, Porsche debuted the 911 GT3 R Hybrid in 2010 as a ‘racing lab’. Running the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, the hybrid-powered Porsche 911 GT3 R gained considerable publicity. For 2011, Porsche intensifies its development of electric-assisted powertrains in motorsports. Classified as version 2.0, the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing lab is the reaction to lessons learned in the three race competitions in 2010 Porsche first exhibited their electric-assisted sports car. Rethinking their hybrid components, the Porsche engineers have evaluated their sports car’s cutting edge drive system. Shaving 20 percent of the weight from the previous hybrid powertrain, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 features more output from its twin electric motors. Generating 60 kilowatts a piece last year, the new Porsche hybrid racing lab features electric motors sparking out 75 kilowatts. The electric power boost translates to the wheels through either automatically through computer-controlled bursts or manually via a driver-activated button. The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 will have an available boost of nearly 200 horsepower on tap; a 40 horsepower increase over the 2010 model. Through electric power increase, Porsche’s goal with the revised 911 GT3 R Hybrid is to decrease...
VW Channels Microbus Past in Bulli Concept
VW Channels Microbus Past in Bulli Concept
In the late 1960s, the Volkswagen brand existed within the culture of peace and love being practiced by baby boomers as they railed against the establishment. Ironically, many member of this carefree crowd have unwittingly become the modern day establishment. Also changing, the Volkswagen brand eventually steered away from value-added vehicles turning to an upscale automobile provide for the United States market. In the case of Volkswagen, the premium price tags as well as some absurdly expensive offerings like the Phaeton flushed away the ideals of their early vehicles. Starting with the latest generation Golf introduced in 2010 and continuing through the show stopping 2011 model year Jetta, the German brand is reconnecting to its roots. Corresponding with the latest revolution for electric vehicles, Volkswagen newest concept vehicle shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show marries the best of retro design. A small urban utility vehicle styled similarly to a Scion xB or xD, the Volkswagen Bulli concept car innovations come within a body featuring design cues from the Type 2 T1 Volkswagen van. Sold through the 1950s up to the 1970s, the classic van went a long way to establish Volkswagen’s identity (second only to the Beetle). Often referred to simply as the Microbus in the United States, the name Bulli (which the Geneva concept vehicle adapts for this theme recreation) identified the forerunner to the modern minivan in Germany. Reminiscent to the T1 version of the Type 2 van, the Volkswagen Bulli front end, a giant VW crust is worn in the center. Employing a two-tone paint scheme, a red lower section is contrasted by a white higher section converges in a gradual fashion along the forward bodywork. Nothing is traditional about the Bulli’s headlamps as advanced dual beam units feature an L-shaped LED band for daytime running lights. Admiring the Bulli concept vehicle’s side detail, the keen Volkswagen enthusiast is destined to be reminded of the 15-window models of the classic Deluxe Microbus. Along the side, multiple window surfaces are assembled on the Volkswagen Bulli concept with minimal interference between structural roof pillars. The only major roof pillars are integrated into the rear end. On the small tires, wheel covers styled for the hubcaps found on...
