Toshiba Comes Up with Advanced Pedestrian Detection System for Cars
It looks like Toshiba is ready to improve our whole driving experience while adding some much needed safety to driving. The company has developed a new pedestrian detection technology which will warn you whenever there are people near your vehicle. The new technology has more than 99% accuracy during the day so it sound pretty interesting already. How does it work? Well the system uses two cameras mounted on the car and that’s how it recognizes people and objects. Unfortunately this new tech will be available by 2011 or 2012 so we have plenty of time to learn more about such safety systems! via Nikkei Related Posts Toshiba’s Computer Keeps an Eye on You Audi’s Traffic Light Detection System Gets Approved Irvine BMW Set to Unveil Z4 and 7 Series VW and Toyota to Make Electric Drive Systems? BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics Concept, The Hybrid I’m Not Embarassed to Drive
BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics Concept, The Hybrid I’m Not Embarassed to Drive
Going “Green” has supposedly been the hip thing to do for the last few years. At first, you had celebrities who were early adopters of vehicles such as the Toyota Prius or even the BMW Hydrogen 7. Other alternative energy vehicles have come along in the meantime with the Chevy Volt,  Tesla Roadster and the Fisker Karma – styled and built by former BMW Z8 designer Henrik Fisker. However, Most of these “Green” vehicles have impractical or somewhat half-baked ideas of vehicles that are unattractive and ultimately cause more environmental harm than they supposedly prevent with the ingredients and byproducts that go into the their manufacture. With regard to hydrogen-powered and fully electric vehicles, you get into the issue of infrastructure that must be in place to service vehicles – something that doesn’t come cheap and isn’t a quick fix. It would seem that nobody has come up with the fix for an energy crisis for what our world around us would require. However, maybe BMW is well on their way or at least much further along than the competition. Due to be released at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in September, BMW shocked the world with an early debut of the new Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The concept encapsulates the future of BMW’s push for efficiencies and fuel sipping technologies. But, many might not know this isn’t BMW’s first endeavor into alternative energy sourced vehicles – and we’re not talking hydrogen. In the mid-1990’s BMW toyed with the idea of building fully electric car. The car was the BMW E1, a very small city car concept designed to maximize interior space while being powered by a small electric motor. The car was debuted in amongst the other electric cars of the early-to-mid 1990’s from other car manufacturers. However, as the cost of implementing this technology was exorbitant and the market was highly unreceptive, the E1 and other electic cars were abandoned, forever in the realm of concept cars. However, it was the first BMW to really demonstrate the ability the crafty Bavarians had to build a logical, compelling car for the masses, in Europe at least where fuel prices were already sky rocketing and had been for years. It would be another...

Petron’s E10 Ethanol Gas Harmful for Engines?
We are all aware that the search for alternative fuel for use by cars these days is growing rampant and apparently we have seen a lot of them. Leading the pack are biodiesels and ethanol but as criticized before, the matter of how the car engine would react is still up in the air. The manufacturers claim that they will not have any effect and even improve car performance. However, as far as the Philippines Petron Corporation is concerned, they are harmful and may lead to damaged car engines. The Ethanol gasoline E10 is the alternative fuel being hit, said to be highly corrosive. The E10 fuel is still being sold locally in the Philippines and reports of damaged car engines have been relayed. The Department of Energy (DOE) has been urged of the matter and nothing has been divulged as of yet. The E10 damages a car’s gas tank, fuel pump, carburetor and fuel injector according to Petron Corp. Chairman Ramon S. Ang. The problem, he said, was that the government did not specify that there should be a dehydrator to remove the water content, which is what makes the ethanol-blended gasoline (E10) highly corrosive. Ludacris gives away 20 free cars to the needy
During tough economic times where American citizens are being forced to give up their houses and cars, famous rapper Ludacris (Christopher Brian Bridges) decided to come to the rescue. During a recent appearance on a local radio in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, Ludacris announced that if listeners were able to pay the taxes, registration, tags and insurance, they can have a free car through his nonprofit Ludacris Foundation. “This is Ludacris, and I’m giving away 20 free cars,” the rapper said on the radio. Those interested in winning had to write a 300 word essay on why they deserved a new car. Nearly 4,000 individuals submitted essays. Ludacris and his mother, Roberta Shields, who heads up his foundation, helped give away the cars yesterday. Winners were picked based on which stories they found most compelling and made phone calls and interviewed people who were friends/families of the finalists. – By: Stephen Calogera Source: CNN Original post:  Ludacris gives away 20 free cars to the needy Read more:  Ludacris gives away 20 free cars to the needy

Frankfurt 2009: Ford C-Max
Frankfurt 2009: Ford C-Max
Ford will not be left out of the Frankfurt show. Being the only US automaker who survived the financial crisis without having to declare bankruptcy, they should be proud of showcasing their cars. Never mind if they’re not supercar material. This here’s the new Ford C-Max which gets the honor of being built on the same platform as the next-gen Ford Focus. The car’s basically a people mover with five and seven-seater options. Your choice depending on the number of butts you’ll be hauling around. The car will be powered by Ford’s turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. The C-segment platform used by the C-Max will also be shared by the upcoming Focus and the Kuga replacement. Pictured is the illustration of the five-seater C-Max. The larger seven-seater will be styled differently mimicking similar people movers like Renault Grand Scenic which employs sliding doors for better access to rear seats. Formula 1: Lotus to Return Next Season
Formula 1: Lotus to Return Next Season
Lotus, which in recent years, have made its name by developing pocket supercars that lives by their agility and ability to finesse their way through corners and the company is poised to return to Formula One next year. The effort is no less led by the Malaysian government itself. It won’t be a start-from-scratch effort either since the team will be taking over BMW Sauber. The team will be backed by the other Malaysian giant Petronas oil. The influx of esteemed European officials into Lotus has brought in fresh ideas such as competing in the world’s largest motorsport. The arrival of former Ferrari exec Dany Bahar as Lotus CEO is said to have spurred on the effort. Several other teams aside from Lotus (like Aston Martin and USF1) are looking into participating next season and the FIA is reported to be still deliberating the issue. Mazda has no plans for electric-vehicles until battery technology improves
Mazda has no plans for electric-vehicles until battery technology improves
While Honda, Nissan and Toyota all seem to be focusing aggressively on electric-vehicle development, Mazda is saying not to zero-emissions or range-extended vehicles. Speaking to Wards Auto at a media event in Monterey, California, Senior Vice President of Research and Development Robert Davis said that Mazda will stay away from EVs until battery technology improves. “Until battery technology can get there to meet a mass customer’s needs, and a customer in North America certainly drives further than the existing technology will allow, we don’t have the plans set in place yet for an electric vehicle,” said Davis. Davis said that the “technology does not meet Mazda’s fun to drive criteria and the high cost of electric powertrain development makes such a project financially unattractive.” He said that rather working on EV development, Mazda plans to focus on other fuel-saving methods to meet tighter CAFE regulations. – By: Stephen Calogera Source: Wards Auto (via AllCarsElectric ) Continued here:  Mazda has no plans for electric-vehicles until battery technology improves More:  Mazda has no plans for electric-vehicles until battery technology improves
